Community Action is a non-profit organization that began in 1964 when the Economic Opportunity Act was passed in order to help those facing poverty, to “fight Americas War on Poverty’. Ten years later the “Community Services Act’ replaced the Economic Opportunity Act. The CSA opened another service, “Community Services Administration’, an independent federal agency that controls all the North Dakota Community Action Agencies (CAA).
North Dakota has seven CAAs that opened in 1976 and they serve 53 counties and all the regions in the state. The state is broke down into 7 regions that CAAs serve, they are as following.
Region 1 and 8: Community Action Partnership (Williston and Dickenson)
Region 2: Community Action Partnership (Minot region)
Region 3: Dakota Prairie Community Action (Devils Lake)
Region 4: Red River Valley Community Action (Grand Forks)
Region 5: Southeastern ND Community Action (Fargo)
Region 6: Community Action Program region 6 (Jamestown)
Region 7: Community Action Program region 7 (Bismark)

Some of the services offered by Community Action are, preschool services, childcare, education, emergency assistance, energy assistance, financial and legal services, food programs, health services, and more.
There is a needs assessment survey that community action clients have to fill out in order to get the help and services clients need. Each region provides different services. Some of the services in one region may not be available in all regions. Services provided by community action of ND depends on the region an individual or family lives in, of what services are available to them
Community Action of North Dakota will continue to provide services to those in need, in hopes of improving the “War on Poverty’ and that someday poverty will diminish.
